ADVISORY

###

A DEI "advisor" generally focuses on providing long-term, strategic guidance to an organization on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues, often acting as a trusted partner to help identify potential problems and develop overarching strategies, while a DEI "consultant" is typically brought in to solve specific, defined DEI challenges by conducting assessments, offering targeted recommendations, and assisting with implementation of solutions on a more short-term basis.

Key differences:

  • Timeframe:

DEI advisors usually have a longer-term relationship with an organization, offering ongoing advice and support, while DEI consultants work on specific projects with a defined timeline.

  1. Focus:

Advisors tend to focus on broader strategic issues, identifying potential DEI concerns and guiding the organization towards proactive improvements, whereas consultants tackle specific problems like biased hiring practices or lack of inclusive leadership training.

  2. Level of involvement:

A DEI advisor might be more integrated into the organization's decision-making process, providing input on various initiatives, while a DEI consultant may be more hands-off once they deliver their recommendations.

Example scenarios:

  • DEI Advisor:

An organization might hire a DEI advisor to help develop a comprehensive DEI strategy, review current policies for potential bias, and provide ongoing guidance on creating an inclusive workplace culture.

  1. DEI Consultant:

A company might engage a DEI consultant to conduct a workplace climate survey to identify areas for improvement in diversity, facilitate unconscious bias training for managers, or design targeted recruitment strategies to attract diverse candidates.
